The Bird Cage
They walk in circles, never stray,
The door is open, yet they stay.
Grey skies call out, but none will go,
Afraid to fall, afraid to know.
The light outside remains unseen,
For comfort lies in what's routine.
They dream of flight, of breaking free,
But live and die in misery.
Door, Window and Stair, the first project for the term, is direct in its exploration of these ideas, with particular emphasis on the questions of spatial definition and abstraction, scale, threshold, tectonics, and program/occupancy.

Narrative
"The Bird Cage" explores the tension between familiarity and the unknown, capturing the repetitive cycles of life. The design centers on a continuous passage, symbolizing how individuals often move through predictable spaces, engaging with the same ideas and perspectives. Surrounding this cycle is a fragmented, unreachable space that represents the allure of discovery and complexity beyond the binary of right and wrong.
Though inhabitants can gaze into this grey area, they remain trapped in their familiar routines. "The Bird Cage" serves as a metaphor for the barriers we create, highlighting the irony of desiring new possibilities while being bound by old patterns. The project invites reflection on breaking free from the comfort of the known to embrace the richness of the unknown.
